Spring Cleaning Week with Residents
Mayor to Inspect Vulnerable Areas in All 19 Neighborhoods and Establish Landscape Improvement Plans
March 27 Cleaning Day: 1,600 Residents Join to Give Nowon-gu Streets a Thorough Cleaning
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will designate the period from the 24th to the 28th as the Spring Cleaning Week and conduct a large-scale cleaning campaign.
Among these days, the 27th will be designated as the "Cleaning Day," during which public and private sectors will participate in a joint cleaning effort.
Cleaning Day and Spring Cleaning Week focus on intensive cleaning of accumulated dirt and trash over the winter on major roads, hiking trails, green spaces, and public facilities. The period is designated annually because even after water cleaning, there is no risk of road freezing, and it is necessary to remove remaining de-icing agents on roads during the snow removal period.
Major roads such as Dongil-ro, Nohae-ro, and Sanggye-ro will be cleaned using cleaning vehicles for road surface watering, dust suction, and road surface cleaning. Water trucks will also handle pigeon droppings accumulated in above-ground sections of subway stations like Nowon Station and Sanggye Station, as well as under overpasses. Additionally, street trash bins, areas around subway stations, parks, green belts along walking trails, and riverbanks will be intensively maintained.
On the 27th, designated as "Cleaning Day," all 19 neighborhoods in Nowon-gu will simultaneously conduct cleaning activities with residents. About 1,600 people, including employees of neighborhood community centers, professional organizations, Clean Guardians, and volunteers, will participate, focusing on cleaning vulnerable areas selected by each neighborhood.
On the same day, cultural and sports facilities, welfare centers, traditional markets, and resident education facilities in each district will also participate simultaneously to enhance cleaning effectiveness. Residents, including sports clubs, village community groups, and market promotion associations, will join in focusing on roads and green belts around these facilities, adding greater significance to the effort.
Especially around this year’s cleaning period, the mayor will visit the sites of all 19 neighborhoods to personally inspect vulnerable cleaning areas. This is to prepare effective cleaning by checking the management status of alleys, areas with frequent complaints, and vulnerable points before the cleaning, and to seek landscape improvement measures to minimize residents’ inconvenience after cleaning.
On-site inspections will be conducted on foot by the mayor, relevant neighborhood officials, and related departments of the district office, followed by discussions on improvement measures identified on-site. The district plans to continuously manage vulnerabilities and improvements derived from the inspections to maintain a pleasant urban landscape.
Since 2018, the district has been making extensive efforts to improve the cleaning system and urban landscape. With strengthened illegal dumping crackdowns, focused cleaning of vulnerable areas, and operation of the resident monitoring team "Nowon SWAT," the system has been established, leading to Nowon-gu being selected as the best district in Seoul’s urban cleanliness evaluation in 2021.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Urban cleanliness is closely related to residents’ satisfaction with their living environment and can quickly deteriorate if neglected even briefly, so it is an area that requires constant attention. We will strive to create a pleasant environment so that the spring cleaning can also sweep away the dust accumulated in the hearts of our residents.”
