Seongdong-gu 'Songjeong Smart Healthcare Center' Opens

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) opened the ‘Songjeong Smart Healthcare Center’ (37 Gwangnaru-ro 11-gil) on the 13th. This is the second smart healthcare center in the district, following the one in Sageun-dong.

South Korea entered a super-aged society faster than expected, with the population aged 65 and over exceeding 20% of the total population by the end of December 2024. As of February 2025, Seongdong-gu also shows a continuous increase trend, with the population aged 65 and over exceeding 51,000, accounting for 18.7% of the total population.

In response, the district is making special efforts to establish the ‘Seongdong-type Integrated Senior Care System’ to proactively address the super-aged society. The focus is on resolving health-related care within the community with the goal of “healthy aging in place.”

In particular, the installation of ‘Smart Healthcare Centers’ in each neighborhood is being actively promoted. The ‘Smart Healthcare Center’ is a facility where seniors can easily and safely perform strength exercises and manage their health in daily life. By utilizing a health management system integrated with smart technology, it scientifically measures and systematically manages seniors’ health status, playing a key role in delaying entry into long-term care and nursing facilities as much as possible.

Operating for Seongdong-gu residents aged 60 and over, as well as middle-aged individuals at risk of sarcopenia, unlike existing health facilities that focus on rehabilitation treatment, it helps elderly and pre-elderly residents in the area improve their self-health management abilities and maintain a healthy and normal life.

The first ‘Sageun Smart Healthcare Center,’ which opened last December, showed through a month-long pilot operation that users ranged from their 60s to over 80s, with residents coming not only from Sageun-dong but also from Haengdang, Wangsimni, and Seongsu areas. Above all, users expressed high satisfaction as they were able to systematically learn strength training methods, which are usually difficult to access, under expert guidance and exercise safely. Currently, based on an analysis of seniors’ physical characteristics and lifestyle habits, a three-month intensive management program has been developed and is being operated.

On March 13, the second ‘Smart Healthcare Center’ was opened in Songjeong-dong. The ‘Songjeong Smart Healthcare Center’ was established as a four-story facility utilizing the Songjeong-dong urban regeneration hub facility ‘Happiness Full Platform.’ On the first floor, the Health Measurement Zone evaluates physical functions such as lower limb strength, balance ability, and gait analysis using smart devices and provides health consultations. On the second floor, the Strength Exercise Zone features certified health exercise managers who prescribe customized exercises for each body part using exercise equipment with artificial intelligence (AI) robot technology and support personalized health management through integrated data. The third floor, the Flexibility Exercise Zone, offers flexibility exercises such as stretching before and after strength training, Pilates, and yoga. The fourth floor Healing Zone is designed as a relaxation space where residents can share comfortable daily life through activities like walking on loess balls, reading, and enjoying art and music, adding a special touch.

The district plans to use the ‘Smart Healthcare Centers’ as key spaces for providing integrated care services organically linked with senior welfare centers, dementia relief centers, mental health welfare centers, and local institutions. Additionally, in July this year, one more ‘Smart Healthcare Center’ will be added in Wangsimni 2-dong, with a long-term plan to install centers in all neighborhoods to improve accessibility for seniors.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The ‘Smart Healthcare Center’ is expected to greatly help seniors improve their muscle strength and cognitive abilities through customized exercise prescriptions, measurement, and management using smart technology.” He added, “Going forward, we will further strengthen the linkage between medical care, nursing, and care services to firmly establish the ‘Seongdong-type Integrated Senior Care System’ so that seniors can live healthy lives in their communities.”
