Gyeongsangbuk-do is establishing institutional measures to promote the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and prevent crime.

According to the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council on the 12th, the ordinance titled "Ordinance on Establishing an AI Ethics-Based System in Gyeongsangbuk-do," proposed by Provincial Councilor Choi Taerim (People Power Party, Uiseong), has passed the Planning and Economy Committee's review.

This ordinance focuses on proactively addressing ethical issues arising from the development of AI technology and establishing an institutional foundation to protect residents' rights and interests. In particular, it aims to strengthen policy support to ensure that AI technology is utilized safely in both industrial and public sectors.

The ordinance includes provisions such as: ▲ Establishment of a basic plan for building an AI ethics-based system ▲ Operation of a specialized committee ▲ Enactment of the "Gyeongsangbuk-do AI Ethics Charter" ▲ Policy development to prevent the misuse and abuse of AI technology ▲ Strengthening AI ethics education for residents.

Recently, as crimes involving the misuse of deepfake technology have surged, there have been growing calls for urgent legal measures to prevent AI-related crimes.

According to the National Police Agency, from January to October last year, 964 cases of deepfake sex crimes were reported, with 506 suspects apprehended and 23 arrested.

This represents an increase of over 30% compared to the previous year, highlighting that AI-based crimes are emerging as a significant social issue.

An official from Gyeongsangbuk-do stated, "AI technology is rapidly advancing and impacting all industries, but ethical problems and cases of misuse are also increasing. Through the enactment of this ordinance, we will ensure that AI technology is utilized in a safe and trustworthy manner."

Councilor Choi Taerim emphasized, "As AI technology advances, crimes exploiting it are also on the rise. Through this ordinance, we will strengthen the reliability and responsibility of artificial intelligence and do our best to create an environment where residents can feel secure."

Meanwhile, based on this ordinance, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to develop measures to improve public services using AI technology and expand policy support for fostering the AI industry. Various cooperative projects will also be promoted so that AI technology can contribute to improving the quality of life for residents.

The ordinance is scheduled to be finalized at the 353rd extraordinary session of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council on the 20th.
