Korean Satellite Successfully Communicates While Identifying Vehicle Types on Roads from Space

Setrec-i's 'Space IT' Successfully Communicates with Ground Station

On the 16th, Setrec-i, a satellite company within the Daejeon Daedeok Special Zone, announced that its self-developed ultra-high-resolution satellite 'Space IT' successfully communicated with the Svalbard ground station in Norway (a radio station installed on the ground for communication with satellites).

Space IT was launched the previous day from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.

Setrec-i is the first domestic private company to develop a medium-sized Earth observation satellite independently. It is 3 meters tall, weighs 650 kg, and has a resolution of 25 cm, the highest level among domestic commercial satellites.

With the capability to recognize objects measuring 25 cm by 25 cm as a single pixel, it can identify vehicle types on roads.

Setrec-i is expected to be utilized in various fields such as national security, disaster observation, and map making.

Kim I-eul, CEO of Setrec-i, said, “We have successfully developed and launched the ultra-high-resolution optical satellite Space IT by leveraging 25 years of accumulated technology and experience,” adding, “We will continue additional investments with the goal of becoming a key supplier in the ultra-high-resolution imaging market.”
