Mobilizing Support Through Marches and Joint Rallies Across the City
As speculation mounts that the Constitutional Court's ruling on President Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment trial is imminent, the political sphere clashed with weekend outdoor rallies on the 15th. The ruling party called for 'dismissal or rejection of the impeachment,' while the opposition urged for 'swift removal.'
On the same day, members of the People Power Party gathered at a large-scale anti-impeachment rally organized by the conservative Christian group Save Korea at Gumi Station in Gyeongbuk. Lawmakers Na Kyung-won, Yoon Sang-hyun, Koo Ja-geun, Jang Dong-hyuk, and Kang Myung-gu took the stage as speakers, shouting for the 'dismissal or rejection of President Yoon's impeachment motion.'
Lawmaker Na said, "When former President Park Chung-hee visited Taiwan in 1969, he said, 'The Republic of Korea is a bulwark of freedom,'" adding, "Let's make the waves of freedom even stronger. That begins on the day President Yoon returns to office with the impeachment nullified or dismissed."
Lawmaker Yoon emphasized, "Seven to eight years ago, we foolishly made the mistake of impeaching our former President Park Geun-hye," and added, "We must never repeat such an error. President Yoon's impeachment must be dismissed."
Lawmaker Park Dae-chul pressured the Constitutional Court at a rally in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, led by Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church, saying, "There is so much public opposition that impeachment cannot proceed despite it."
Lawmakers Park Deok-heum and Kim Min-jeon participated in the fifth consecutive day of relay protests in front of the Constitutional Court, urging dismissal or rejection of the impeachment. Lawmaker Song Eon-seok hosted an anti-impeachment rally in his constituency, Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk.
The Democratic Party continued its fourth day of the 'Yoon Seok-yeol Removal Urging March' from the National Assembly to Gwanghwamun, then held the 'Joint Emergency National Rally of the Five Opposition Parties' at Gwanghwamun together with the Party for People's Innovation, Progressive Party, Basic Income Party, and Social Democratic Party.
They then attended a pro-impeachment rally hosted by the 'Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of Yoon Seok-yeol and Social Reform' (Emergency Action), a civic group coalition.
At the joint rally, the Democratic Party demanded the Constitutional Court promptly issue a removal ruling against President Yoon.
Supreme Council member Lee Eon-ju stated, "Are you anxious? There is no need to be. Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment cannot fail," emphasizing, "Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law is a 100% violation of the Constitution, and even a single proclamation order is sufficient."
She added, "We will protect the Constitutional Court so that it can safely uphold the constitutional order without suffering from riots. The Constitutional Court should feel assured and quickly decide on Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment to save our difficult Republic of Korea."
