The curling tournament featuring top-level athletes from 13 countries around the world has kicked off in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.

Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) successfully held the opening ceremony of the ‘2025 LGT World Women's Curling Championship’ on the 15th at the Uijeongbu Indoor Ice Rink.
The opening ceremony was attended by key domestic and international figures including Yoo In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Kim Dong-geun, Mayor of Uijeongbu; Yoo Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee; Beau Welling, President of the World Curling Federation; Han Sang-ho, President of the Korean Curling Federation; and Kim Yeon-geun, Chairperson of the Uijeongbu City Council.
Additionally, 104 athletes from 13 countries and over 500 spectators gathered to heighten the excitement of the opening. The athletes entered amid performances by a military band and a traditional Korean marching band, and the tournament officially began with a welcoming speech by Mayor Kim Dong-geun.

Notably, at the event, the entire South Korean women's curling team ‘5G Team,’ who won the gold medal at the ‘9th Harbin Winter Asian Games’ held last month, received enthusiastic support from citizens as all members are from Uijeongbu.
Outside the venue, various programs were offered to citizens and spectators, including a live viewing event in collaboration with the Uijeongbu City Commercial Area Revitalization Foundation and an easy-to-participate floor curling experience, providing special enjoyment for all.
The tournament, running until the 23rd, will feature a total of 84 games played in a round-robin format, starting with the Korea-Japan match. Especially, seven spots for the ‘2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics’ are at stake, promising fierce competition among the national teams.
