Jangseong County Council Voices Concern Over Reduced Research Scope
Urges Retention of Original Institute Name
The Jangseong County Council in Jeonnam recently announced on the 14th that it opposes the name change of the National Cardiocerebrovascular Research Institute and urges the retention of the original name.
The County Council adopted the "Resolution Urging the Restoration of the Original Name of the National Cerebrovascular Research Institute," which was proposed by Councilor Cha Sanghyun, at the second plenary session of the 367th extraordinary meeting held on the 11th. Through a statement, the council expressed, "We strongly express our concerns over the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's move to change the institute's name to 'Cardiovascular.' This does not align with the purpose of establishing the institute and may limit the scope of research and hinder the expansion of its projects."
Chairman Sim Minseop stated, "This name change is not a mere terminology issue, but an act that disregards the institute's role and the expectations of the local community. The council will reflect the opinions of local residents and strive to ensure that the institute achieves its original goals."
The National Institute of Health under the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency held a design service contest on the 26th of last month for the National Cardiovascular Research Institute, which will be established in the Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone, Advanced District 3, in Jangseong County. The institute is scheduled for completion in 2029 and plans to conduct national cardiovascular disease research and development (R&D) as well as clinical research on cardiovascular diseases specialized for Koreans.
Although the name 'National Cardiocerebrovascular Research Institute' was finalized during the feasibility study and establishment promotion stages, discussions are ongoing as the option to change it to 'Cardiovascular' is being considered.
