Insurance Fraud Ring Caught for Deliberate Accidents with Imported Cars, Pocketing 800 Million Won Gwangju Police Agency building.

On the 14th, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced that they had arrested and referred 41 people, including a person identified as A, on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.

From July 2022 to August 2023, they are accused of causing a total of 55 accidents in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas by intentionally colliding with vehicles changing lanes. They allegedly received a total of 815.3 million won from insurance companies under the pretense of settlement money and unperformed repair costs.

The group led by A consisted of local acquaintances who purchased 29 high-priced imported cars at below-market prices, took out short-term insurance policies, deliberately caused accidents, and then scrapped the vehicles to claim insurance payouts. It was found that they divided the money received according to their assigned roles in each accident.

The police uncovered the scheme by analyzing vehicle purchase records, bank transactions, and conducting mobile phone searches. A police official stated, "Even minor traffic violations can become targets for intentional accidents," and urged the public to strictly observe traffic laws.
