New and Expanded Jisan Reservoir by 2028, Jiwon by 2027
Project Details Shared and Feedback Gathered at Residents' Briefing Session
The Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters announced on the 14th that it held a residents' briefing session regarding the construction of the Jisan and Jiwon water reservoirs, which are being promoted to ensure a stable supply of tap water, and plans to complete the construction by 2028.
A ‘water reservoir (Baesuji)’ is a storage facility built to distribute tap water to various regions and plays a crucial role in the water supply system. It is installed at a high elevation to secure enough water to supply tap water stably for more than 12 hours. In particular, to maintain even water pressure, prevent leakage, and ensure water supply without interruption during accidents, the system is operated as an indirect supply rather than direct supply.
The Waterworks Headquarters will newly construct the Jisan water reservoir and expand the Jiwon water reservoir to approximately double its current capacity.
The Jisan water reservoir construction project, with a total budget of 30.44 billion KRW, will create a facility with a capacity of 14,000㎥ (10,000㎥ for high elevation, 4,000㎥ for low elevation) and install new transmission and distribution pipelines (pipe diameter D600~700㎜, length L=5.6㎞). Construction began in 2019 and is scheduled for completion in 2028, with a current progress rate of 32%. The Jisan water reservoir is a multi-stage reservoir designed to ensure stable water supply to Duam-dong in Buk-gu and Sansu, Jisan, and Jiwon-dong in Dong-gu.
The Jiwon water reservoir expansion project, with a total budget of 19.29 billion KRW, aims to increase the reservoir's capacity from the current 19,000㎥ to approximately 36,000㎥ by 2027. This will enable stable water supply to Dongnim, Junghung, and Yongbong-dong in Buk-gu, Sotae and Jiwon-dong in Dong-gu, and Yuchon and Gwangcheon-dong in Seo-gu.
The Waterworks Headquarters previously held residents' briefing sessions on the 12th at the Jisan 2-dong Community Center and the Jiwon 1-dong Administrative Welfare Center. During the sessions, the scale, progress, and future plans of the reservoir projects were explained, and residents' opinions were gathered. The city plans to reflect residents' feedback as much as possible, strengthen measures to reduce noise and dust, and enhance traffic and safety management during construction to minimize inconvenience.
Kim Jaejung, Director of Technology at the Waterworks Headquarters, stated, “The reservoir construction project is important for providing clean and safe tap water to local residents, and their understanding and cooperation are essential. We will do our best to continuously communicate with citizens and minimize any inconvenience.”
