Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is focusing on intensive care for single-person households centered around the Gangnam-gu Single-Person Household Community Center operating in Yeoksam-dong. Last June, the district expanded and relocated the center near Gangnam Station and significantly increased customized programs.
This year, various projects will be operated considering the characteristics of single-person households, which are prone to welfare blind spots. Reflecting opinions that the programs operated at the center so far, aimed at "improving the quality of life for single-person households," had a high proportion of one-time and short-term curricula, the district has newly organized regular programs in various fields starting this year.
The regularly scheduled programs are diversely composed, including life planning for a healthy future and economic independence, home repair and interior information, speech skills necessary in daily life such as employment, digital drawing to enhance creative thinking and form social networks, ukulele performance, Pilates and niche home training helpful for health management, and social dining classes for making healthy meals.
In addition, single-person households born after 1966 who have completed their move-in registration to Gangnam-gu this year will receive a 20,000 KRW Daiso gift certificate to purchase daily necessities as a gift. It can be collected by visiting the center after newly joining the center membership.
Customized networking programs for middle-aged and older adults have also been planned. Programs mainly consist of walking and talking together, such as Seoul Dulle-gil courses and downtown walking tours, visits to Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Seodaemun Natural History Museum, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Gyeongbokgung Palace tours, actively supporting natural communication leading to the formation of social networks.
Since last month, the district has assigned dedicated personnel for center promotion to carry out systematic promotional activities. They plan to professionally manage promotional channels and renew the center’s homepage to make it easy to view information on support projects for single-person households at a glance.
Also, a promotional supporters group composed of various generations from their 20s to 50s will be operated to actively promote various programs for single-person households. The eight supporters selected through the launch ceremony and orientation held on the 7th expressed their determination to actively engage in producing social network service (SNS) promotional content tailored to the perspective of single-person households in the first half of this year.
District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong said, “We will carefully watch over those who might fall into welfare blind spots by using the Gangnam-gu Single-Person Household Community Center established in Yeoksam-dong, where the proportion of single-person households is high, as a focal point.” He added, “We will make sure that living in Gangnam-gu does not feel lonely even if you live alone.”
