Inspection of Life Jacket Availability and More Until April 16
Chungnam Province announced on the 13th that it will conduct a joint safety inspection of fishing vessels in cooperation with city and county governments, the Coast Guard, and the Korea Ship Safety and Transport Agency until April 16, in order to prevent fishing boat accidents during the peak spring fishing season.
The province plans to focus inspections on major ports and harbors within the region, checking for the presence and use of life jackets, whether departure and arrival are reported and passenger lists are prepared, the availability of emergency response equipment, and the overall status of vessel safety management.
In addition, the province will inform and check passengers to ensure they always wear life jackets while on board and prohibit drinking alcohol on the vessel, aiming to prevent accidents in advance.
If minor violations are found during the inspection, such as improper placement of life-saving equipment or fire extinguishers, corrective actions will be taken on site or departures may be restricted. For serious violations such as overloading or operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol, strict legal action will be taken.
Jeon Sangwook, Director of the Provincial Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Bureau, said, "To prevent accidents on fishing vessels, it is essential to strengthen the safety awareness of captains, crew, and passengers," and added, "Fishing vessel operators should thoroughly check the condition of safety equipment before departure, and passengers must wear life jackets when boarding."
