Gyeonggi Province announced on the 13th that it will officially launch a river maintenance project with a total budget of 54.3 billion KRW, aiming for completion in 2028, to prevent flood damage risks in Dongmakcheon, a boundary stream between Gogi-dong in Yongin City and Daejang-dong in Seongnam City.

Dongmakcheon suffers from severe sediment accumulation within the river (1.7m sedimentation at Gogi Bridge) and has a narrow river width, exposing it to flood risks every year. During the heavy rain in August 2022, the area around Gogi Bridge was flooded.

Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, visited the Dongmakcheon site three times in July and August 2022 and January 2024 to directly listen to residents' difficulties and announced plans to promote a comprehensive river maintenance project.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province completed the “River Maintenance Project Detailed Design Service” last year to create a safe river environment including walking trails and waterfront environments and to prevent flood damage risks. In the first half of this year, after conducting land appraisal for construction acquisition, compensation will begin, and the maintenance project is planned to start in 2026.

The Dongmakcheon river maintenance project will cover a total section of 1.57 km from just above Nakseong Reservoir to near Jangui 1 Bridge in Gogi-dong, Yongin. The existing embankment width will be expanded from 24m to 40m, and approximately 136,900 cubic meters of sediment will be dredged to secure about 2.7 times the flow cross-section (based on Gogi Bridge), thereby enhancing flood control capacity and safety.

Additionally, a 1.65 km walking trail will be created from Daejang 2 Bridge in Seongnam to near Nakseong Reservoir in Yongin, and a 10,279 square meter park will be additionally developed using the spare land next to Gogi Neighborhood Park in Yongin City, along with other convenience facilities for residents.

Kang Seong-seup, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Construction Bureau, said, “The Dongmakcheon upstream river maintenance project is designed to prepare for heavy rain that occurs once every 80 years, protecting 74,850 square meters of housing, commercial areas, and farmland around Dongmakcheon from flood risks. It will also contribute to improving residents’ quality of life by creating waterfront spaces such as walking trails and parks.”
