Gyeonggi-do Holds Place Name Committee Meeting to Resolve Development Projects and Civil Complaints... 18 Cases Approved

Gyeonggi Province held a naming committee meeting to resolve development projects and civil complaints, approving 18 out of 22 applications.

Gyeonggi Province recently held a naming committee meeting and decided on 18 place names for intersections and parks applied for by Seongnam, Gwangju, and Uiwang cities, and announced them on the National Geographic Information Institute website on the 13th.

Among the 22 place name proposals submitted by these three cities, 18 names such as Hwangsong Intersection and Tongmi Village Entrance Intersection were approved in accordance with the "Regulations on the Maintenance and Management of Natural and Artificial Place Names." However, the remaining four names?Songjeong Study Park, Baegun Lake Prugio Intersection, and Lotte Shopping Mall Samgeori?were rejected as they used foreign words and commercialized names, which do not comply with the basic principles of place naming.

The four proposals rejected by the Gyeonggi Province naming committee will be reconsidered by the city and county naming committees and then decided again by the Gyeonggi Province naming committee.

If there is an objection to the decision of the Gyeonggi Province naming committee, the respective city or county may request a reconsideration from Gyeonggi Province within 30 days. If there is no objection to the naming decision, the National Geographic Information Institute will officially announce the place names, and the cities, counties, and map-related companies will use the decided names.

Kim Yong-jae, Director of the Land Information Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Place names are public goods that can predict the social aspects such as historical thoughts, consciousness structures, traditions and customs, culture, and economy of the time. We will build reliable place name information and provide users with convenient place name information to encourage the proper use of place names."
