Canadian Finance Minister: "Effective from the 13th"
Canada announced on the 12th that starting from the 13th (local time), it will impose a 25% retaliatory tariff on US products worth $21 billion (approximately 31 trillion KRW).
Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's Minister of Finance, stated at a press conference that this tariff measure will apply to US steel, aluminum, computers, sports equipment, and cast iron products.
This is a countermeasure against the Trump administration's enforcement of a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum products entering the US starting at midnight on the same day. Minister LeBlanc explained that this measure will take effect from the 13th, one day after the US tariff enforcement. This tariff imposition is separate from the one Canada imposed on April 4th on US imports worth $30 billion (approximately 44 trillion KRW). The Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports on April 4th but granted a grace period until May 2nd, while Canada has maintained its tariff measures.
Earlier, the European Union (EU) also announced on the same day that it would impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth $28 billion (approximately 41 trillion KRW) starting in April, in response to the Trump administration's steel and aluminum tariff enforcement. The retaliatory tariffs will apply to steel, aluminum, beef, motorcycles, and whiskey imported from the US.
