Kim Yong-won, Military Human Rights Protection Officer and Standing Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), on the 12th urged the approval of bail and non-detention trials for military generals who were arrested and indicted in connection with the December 3 emergency martial law.
According to the NHRCK, Commissioner Kim delivered a letter on the same day to the Chief Judge of the Central Regional Military Court, urging the prompt approval of bail and non-detention trials for five detained individuals: Park An-su, Chief of Staff of the Army; Yeo In-hyung, former Counterintelligence Commander; Kwak Jong-geun, former Special Warfare Commander; Lee Jin-woo, former Capital Defense Command Commander; and Moon Sang-ho, former Intelligence Command Commander.
In a press release, Commissioner Kim stated, "It is unjust by any measure that high-ranking military commanders continue to be detained and tried, even though President Yoon Seok-yeol, the highest authority responsible for the declaration of martial law and the military commander-in-chief, was released following the court's decision to cancel his detention."
This follows the decision made on the 18th of last month by the NHRCK Military Human Rights Protection Committee regarding the case of "Human rights violations due to the military court's prohibition of visits and correspondence with civilians."
Commissioner Kim has previously proposed an agenda recommending the guarantee of President Yoon's right to defend himself in the impeachment trial.
