Comprehensive Review of Traffic, Environment, and Disaster Prevention
Construction to Begin in July, Completion Targeted for 2027
Gwangju Buk-gu is set to thoroughly examine the development of the multi-purpose shopping mall 'The Hyundai Gwangju.' As the project includes a large-scale residential complex, a detailed review is underway, taking into account the impacts on traffic, environment, and disaster prevention.
According to Buk-gu on the 12th, a 'Task Force (TF) for Approval of Development Activities and Implementation Plan for Infrastructure in the Jeonbang and Ilsinbangjik Area' was recently formed and held its first meeting. This follows the application for a building permit by The Hyundai Gwangju Corporation on the 28th of last month. The move aims to analyze potential issues that may arise during the project implementation from various angles and to establish countermeasures.
This project is a large-scale initiative that includes not only a multi-purpose shopping mall but also the construction of the 'Champions City' residential-commercial complex with over 4,300 units. Accordingly, the TF plans to focus on disaster prevention and the adequacy of infrastructure. The deputy district mayor leads the TF, with experts in key fields such as traffic, disaster prevention, and environment participating.
At the first meeting, the design service company reported the layout plans for the shopping mall, residential units, and public facilities within the project area. The TF plans to conduct a full-scale evaluation of traffic, environmental, and disaster prevention measures at the next meeting.
The Hyundai Gwangju will be developed on a site area of 32,364 square meters (height 59.19m, length 214m, width 111m), with a total floor area of 273,895 square meters (6 underground floors, 8 above ground). It will be a large-scale complex mall including shopping, cultural, and leisure facilities, and will be 1.5 times the size of The Hyundai Seoul.
The project has been underway since a district unit plan was proposed to Gwangju City in February last year, followed by a traffic impact assessment, fire safety review, and landscape and architectural deliberations. The Hyundai Gwangju Corporation is completing the demolition work on the former Jeonnam and Ilsinbangjik sites, with construction scheduled to begin in July and completion targeted for the end of 2027.
Buk-gu's decision on this project is expected to impact local politics as well. As it is a project actively promoted by Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijung, the stance of Buk-gu Mayor Moon In, who is preparing to run in the next Gwangju mayoral election, is also drawing attention.
An official from the district stated, "As this is a project that local residents have high expectations for, we will conduct a thorough review to ensure it proceeds without any setbacks."
