Elected at the RAN Technical Plenary on the 12th
Overseeing Standardization of All Wireless Technologies
Samsung Electronics announced on the 12th that Master Kim Yoon-sun (photo) has been elected as the chairperson of the global mobile communication technology standards organization '3GPP'. With this, Samsung Electronics now holds two chairperson positions and four vice-chairperson positions in 3GPP, securing the most chairperson seats among over 800 member companies.
3GPP has been holding the '6G Workshop and Technical Plenary,' an event discussing 6G technology for the first time, in Incheon for five days starting from the 10th. On the 12th, Kim Yoon-sun, Master of the Samsung Research Technology Standards Research Team, was elected chairperson of the Radio Access Network Technical Specification Group (TSG RAN) at the RAN Technical Plenary.
Established in 1998, 3GPP is led by global mobile communication companies and related organizations such as Samsung Electronics, Apple, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, and Qualcomm to establish global mobile communication technology standards. Through producing a 3GPP chairperson, Samsung Electronics will be able to contribute to 6G standardization. The Radio Access Network Technical Specification Group, chaired by Master Kim Yoon-sun, oversees the standardization of all wireless technologies, including the physical layer, wireless protocols, and frequency utilization.
Previously, in 2021, Master Kim Yoon-sun was elected as the first Korean chairperson of the Physical Layer Technical Subgroup (RAN WG1) of the Radio Access Network Technical Specification Group. He was recognized for successfully leading the physical layer technology standardization of 5G over four years, contributing to the emergence of the 5G network industry. After his term as RAN WG1 chairperson expires in May, he will continue to serve as the chairperson of the Radio Access Network Technical Specification Group.
Especially significant is the election of Samsung Electronics’ Master as chairperson by international mobile communication standards experts at the starting point of 6G standardization. 6G is expected to develop in a future-oriented and sustainable direction, including ▲reducing network energy consumption ▲improving network quality using AI ▲introducing security technologies to prevent hacking using quantum computers.
Samsung Electronics is expected to lead 6G technology standardization and contribute to the development of the mobile communication industry through its leadership in next-generation communication technologies. Master Kim Yoon-sun stated, "I will do my best to successfully promote 6G technology standardization in cooperation with mobile communication companies and organizations."
