Recycling Wafer Trays
Supplying Materials for Smartphone Components
Lotte Chemical announced on the 12th that it will supply recycled plastic materials for Samsung Electronics' latest smartphone, the Galaxy S25.
The materials supplied this time are recycled from wafer tray waste used in semiconductor wafer transfer by Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) division, converted into polycarbonate (PC) material, one of the plastic raw materials. This material is then applied to the SIM tray, side key, and volume key components of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Experience (MX) division's Galaxy S25 series smartphones.
Accordingly, Lotte Chemical supplies recycled materials that maintain product quality and performance, and Samsung Electronics is able to establish a resource circulation system between business divisions through the application of Lotte Chemical's recycled materials.
Plastic materials recycled from discarded fishing nets in the ocean are also supplied simultaneously. The plastic material mainly used in fishing nets is polyamide (PA), which has excellent durability and strength and is widely used in various industrial fields. However, discarded fishing nets in the ocean have become an unwelcome threat to the marine ecosystem. To address this issue, Lotte Chemical combines recycled polyamide materials made from discarded fishing nets and supplies them to built-in components such as the speaker module of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S25 smartphone.
Meanwhile, Lotte Chemical has launched and operated the resource circulation brand "ECOSEED" for a sustainable plastic recycling industry since 2023. ECOSEED is a brand that integrates physically and chemically recycled plastic materials and bioplastic materials. The main material groups include high-quality r-ABS, r-PC, r-PET, r-PE, and r-PP, which are on par with conventional general plastic materials.
