Near Johannesburg, South Africa, a commuter bus overturned on the 11th (local time), killing 16 people and injuring about 45, according to local broadcaster eNCA.
According to local police, the bus carrying residents of Katlhong Township (a black township) east of Johannesburg overturned at the junction of R21 and R24 roads near OR Tambo International Airport that morning.
Sixteen people died at the scene, and 45 injured, including the bus driver, were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The broadcaster added that the death toll may rise as some are seriously injured. Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident based on witness statements suggesting the bus was speeding.
South Africa has the most developed road network on the African continent but large traffic accidents frequently occur. The day before, two vehicles collided near Ekurhuleni east of Johannesburg, killing four students and injuring five.
Last week, in KwaZulu-Natal Province in the east, an 82-seat bus rolled into a roadside ditch, killing at least nine people, including a 4-year-old child.
