Old and Small Nam District Office in Daegu to Relocate to 'Gangdangol Public Parking Lot Site' in Bongdeok-dong by 2029

The site for the construction of the new Nam-gu Office in Daegu has been finalized as the "Gangdangol Public Parking Lot" site in Bongdeok-dong, located at the foot of Apsan Mountain.

At the meeting of the Nam-gu Office Construction Site Selection Committee held on the 11th, after evaluating the two candidate sites, the Gangdangol Public Parking Lot site was ultimately selected. The Site Selection Committee was launched in August last year with 25 members, including experts in urban planning, architecture, finance, law, and resident representatives, to ensure democratic decision-making through resident participation and deliberation. For the policy direction of the new Nam-gu Office, various activities were carried out, such as feasibility reviews, expert discussions and opinion gathering, and resident surveys, with the current office and the Gangdangol Public Parking Lot site as candidates.

The Gangdangol Public Parking Lot site, chosen as the final location for the new office, received relatively high marks for its economic feasibility and land suitability due to its large area. It also showed strong competitiveness in terms of geographical symbolism and expandability, being connected to Apsan Mountain.

With this decision, the Nam-gu Office construction project is expected to gain full momentum. Nam-gu, Daegu City, plans to complete the new office by 2029 after conducting a feasibility study, investment review, and detailed design.

Kim Hansu, the committee chairperson, said, "We did our best to ensure the site selection process was transparent and fair, and we ask for the continued interest and support of residents for the full-scale construction of the new office."

The current Nam-gu Office is an old school building completed in 1971 and has been used as the district office since 1981. It has long caused many difficulties and inconveniences as a government office, leading to a consistent demand for a new building. Some departments are working in rented external buildings, resulting in inconvenience for residents due to space shortages and chronic parking issues.

Cho Jaegu, mayor of Nam-gu, Daegu, said, "I believe it is very meaningful that we have made the first step toward building the new office, which will be the central axis of Nam-gu's next 100 years, together with the residents," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that the new Nam-gu Office becomes a landmark that embodies both the history and future of the region."

Mayor Cho also added, "We will actively work on developing plans for the current site to prevent hollowing-out issues that may arise from the relocation of the current office, alongside the construction of the new office."
