Prosecutors Claim "Child Abuse"
While Driver Argues "Disciplinary Intent"
A driver in his 50s who took a student to the police station after the student jaywalked was put on trial on charges of child abuse.
On the 11th, Judge Kim Yongshin, the chief judge of the Criminal Division 8 of the Gwangju District Court, held the first trial for Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act.
Mr. A is accused of picking up a student who was riding an electric scooter and jaywalking on a road in Seo-gu, Gwangju in July last year, and taking the student to the police station in his car.
At the time, Mr. A sounded his horn, reversed his car to stop the student, and said, "There could have been a traffic accident," before taking the student to the police station. He then dropped the student off and left. The student's side filed a complaint, and the prosecution judged Mr. A's actions to constitute child abuse and indicted him.
In court, Mr. A denied the charges, saying, "I only intended to discipline the dangerous behavior, not to forcefully take the student."
The court plans to call the parties involved as witnesses to verify the facts of the case.
