Basic Plan for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Completed
"We will do our utmost to reduce greenhouse gases by 703,000 tons with a target of 1,056,000 tons by 2030."
On the 11th, Noh Kwankyu, Mayor of Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, announced, "We have completed the service for establishing the Basic Plan for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth."
Mayor Noh stated, "The Basic Plan for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth is a legally mandated plan that establishes detailed implementation strategies to achieve the mid- to long-term national greenhouse gas reduction target of 40% by 2030 and realize carbon neutrality by 2050."
The main contents include analysis of Suncheon’s climate change and basic status, current and projected greenhouse gas emissions, discovery of Suncheon-type carbon neutrality projects, as well as education, promotion, implementation management, and establishment of a feedback system.
He further explained, "So far, we have set a greenhouse gas reduction roadmap and developed sector-specific implementation strategies, incorporating diverse opinions through advisory meetings and surveys."
In addition, he set the vision as 'Realizing sustainable carbon neutrality together with citizens, Suncheon as Korea’s premier ecological capital,' and presented targets of a 40% reduction by 2030 and a 52.3% reduction by 2034 compared to 2018. The goal is to reduce emissions from 1,758,000 tons in 2018 by 703,000 tons to 1,056,000 tons by 2030.
To achieve this, Mayor Noh added, "We plan to implement various policies such as expanding the operation of carbon neutrality points, spreading green lifestyle culture, improving building energy efficiency, expanding the supply of renewable energy, and realizing energy welfare."
He also said, "We will fully activate the Suncheon-type eco-friendly transportation policy called 'Daejabo' (public transportation, bicycles, walking) and expand the supply of eco-friendly vehicles and charging infrastructure."
In the agriculture and livestock sectors, he said that the city will promote expansion of eco-friendly farming and low-carbon certification, support for energy-saving facilities in horticultural greenhouses, and production of solid fuel from livestock manure.
He further explained, "In the waste sector, we plan to achieve reductions by decreasing waste generation, spreading zero-waste culture, and strengthening resource and energy recycling."
Mayor Noh stated, "We will expand nature-based carbon sinks such as green carbon (gardens) and blue carbon (Suncheonman Wetland), and promote the creation of green infrastructure such as tree planting."
