Namdong-gu, Incheon announced on the 11th that it has supported compensation for 1,541 cases of damage through group bicycle insurance over the past six years.
From July 1, 2019, the first year of group insurance enrollment, to January of this year, a total of 1,541 cases and insurance payments amounting to 886.98 million KRW were made.
The group bicycle insurance system was first introduced by the district in 2019 to reduce damage caused by unforeseen accidents and to promote bicycle use. The number of insurance payments has been increasing annually, with 297 cases in 2023 and 358 cases in 2024.
This year, the district also enrolled in the 'Namdong-gu Group Bicycle Insurance' so that all residents can ride bicycles with peace of mind. Any resident with an address in Namdong-gu is automatically enrolled in the insurance without any separate procedures and can receive support for medical expenses in case of an accident.
The main coverage includes 15 million KRW in case of death, up to 15 million KRW for permanent disability according to the grade, consolation money of 200,000 to 600,000 KRW for diagnoses lasting more than four weeks, and 200,000 KRW for hospitalizations of six days or more.
Support is also provided in case of criminal issues arising from bicycle accidents. For each bicycle accident, fines up to 20 million KRW, attorney fees up to 2 million KRW, and traffic accident handling support of up to 30 million KRW per person are covered.
Park Jong-hyo, the district mayor, said, "I hope that all residents can use bicycles more safely through the group bicycle insurance," and added, "We will continue to strive to ensure that more residents can benefit from this program."
