17th President of Sogang University
The inauguration ceremony of President Shim Jong-hyuk, who has been reappointed as the 17th president of Sogang University, will be held on the morning of the 13th at the Sogang University St. Ignatius Hall Chapel.
The ceremony will begin with an inauguration mass officiated by Father Woo Jae-myung, chairman of Sogang University. The event will proceed with the reading of the president’s history, the announcement of the president’s appointment, and the handing over of the Sogang key and university flag. Following this, the opening mass will continue, during which President Shim will deliver an inaugural sermon outlining his vision for the university’s future.
After the inauguration ceremony, a reception will be held at the Matteo Hall. At the reception, President Shim will present his inaugural address, proposing directions for the development of Sogang University. Jesuit Korea Provincial Kim Yong-su, Chairman Woo Jae-myung, and Alumni Association President Kim Kwang-ho are also scheduled to give congratulatory speeches. The official event will conclude with a luncheon for attendees and a closing declaration.
President Shim is an alumnus of Sogang University’s Department of Mathematics (Class of ’74). After completing his master’s degree in physics in 1981, he earned a master’s degree in theology and pastoral studies from Western Theological Seminary in Boston, USA. He later received a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. Since 1992, he has served as a professor at Sogang University and has held various positions including Director of General Affairs, Director of Planning, Director of External Cooperation, Director of the Library, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dean of Graduate Studies.
