Identity Verification Completed by Scanning QR Code from PASS App at Kiosk
SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus, the three major mobile carriers, announced on the 11th that they have introduced a mobile driver's license and resident registration verification service through the simple authentication app PASS at Yonsei University Yongin Severance Hospital.
With the introduction of this service, Yonsei University Yongin Severance Hospital enables easy identity verification via the PASS app. When registering, receiving treatment, or making payments, patients generate an identity verification QR code on the PASS app and scan it at a kiosk, which then transmits information such as name, resident registration number, and mobile phone number to the hospital.
The entered information is delivered to Yonsei University Yongin Severance Hospital through NICE Information & Telecommunication, a Value Added Network (VAN) operator. NICE Information & Telecommunication is the first VAN company to collaborate with the three mobile carriers to support customer identity verification services at medical institutions.
Yonsei University Yongin Severance Hospital is the first domestic hospital to apply the PASS mobile ID verification service QR scan method for identity verification. The QR scan method reduces errors caused by manual input of personal information and improves hospital operational efficiency. Since the revision of the National Health Insurance Act in May last year, which made identity verification mandatory at hospitals, hospital staff had to manually verify patients' physical or mobile IDs one by one.
Earlier, in December last year, the three mobile carriers applied the PASS mobile ID verification service using QR codes to over 3,600 community service centers nationwide. When a civil service user generates an identity verification QR code on the PASS app and the community service center staff scans it with a scanner, information such as name, date of birth, and gender is transmitted to the center.
The three carriers stated, "Starting with the case of Yonsei University Yongin Severance Hospital, we plan to continuously expand the scope of the PASS mobile ID verification service to major hospitals and clinics nationwide, as well as commerce and financial sectors. As a lifestyle-oriented ID app, PASS will take the lead in establishing a safer and more efficient identity verification system."
Meanwhile, the PASS mobile ID verification service can be used for identity and age verification procedures in various public sectors such as police driver's license checks, public election polling stations, and domestic airline check-ins, as well as in convenience stores, movie theaters, and car rentals.
