Inspections to Prevent Marine Pollution Accidents
Targeting Vessels Mobilized for Marine Construction
Focus on Illegal Discharges and Equipment Operation
Strengthening On-site Guidance and Crew Education
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oseong) announced on the 11th that it will conduct inspections to prevent pollution accidents on vessels mobilized for marine construction until the 4th of next month.
This inspection is being carried out to prevent vessel accidents and marine pollution accidents during the spring fog season, targeting six major marine construction sites including Mokpo Port and approximately 24 vessels mobilized for these projects.

The main inspection points include: ▲ whether pollutants (bilge water, sewage, domestic waste, etc.) are being illegally discharged ▲ operational status of marine pollution prevention equipment such as oil filtering devices ▲ adequacy of vessel fuel oil (sulfur oxides) ▲ methods of oil transfer and management status of transfer hoses.
The maritime police plan to strengthen on-site guidance to prevent various marine pollution accidents such as oil spills due to vessel negligence and illegal discharge of bilge water at construction sites. They will also conduct preventive education for vessel crew members on how to fill out pollutant record books and explain major pollution accident cases to ensure thorough protection of the marine environment.
A Mokpo Maritime Police official stated, "This inspection targets vessels such as tugboats and crane barges mobilized for marine construction, which are vulnerable to marine pollution accidents, and we ask for continued interest in protecting clean seas."
Meanwhile, Mokpo Maritime Police detected a total of eight violations last year among vessels mobilized for marine construction, including illegal waste disposal, oil spills at sea, and failure to record oil in logbooks.
