March: Month for Environmental Improvement Charge Payment
Avoid Penalties by Paying Within the Deadline
Gimcheon City, North Gyeongsang Province, announced that it has imposed the first installment of the 2025 environmental improvement charges for diesel vehicles, totaling 7,682 cases and 330,831,000 KRW.
This imposition takes place in March, and the environmental improvement charge is a system that encourages pollution reduction by making polluters bear the cost of pollutant treatment and stably secures resources for environmental investment. The charge is imposed twice a year (March and September).
The city stated that the first installment is imposed based on vehicle engine displacement and age for the period from July to December 2024. Additionally, since the environmental improvement charge is imposed in arrears, it may be charged one or two more times even after a change of ownership, scrapping, or deregistration of the vehicle.
The notice for the first installment was sent by mail on March 10, and the payment deadline is March 31. In addition to the notice, payment can be made via various methods such as the internet (WETAX), virtual account, or bank ATM.
Lim Changhyun, head of the Environmental Hygiene Division of Gimcheon City, said, "If payment is not made within the deadline, a 3% surcharge will be imposed and disadvantages such as vehicle seizure may occur," and urged, "Please make sure to check the amount stated on the notice and pay within the deadline."
