Gyeonggi Hanam City (Mayor Lee Hyun-jae) announced on the 10th that it will expand the "Smart Metering Project" to convert about 20,000 water meters throughout the city to a remote reading system by 2028. Through this project, citizens will be able to check their water usage in real time without the need for meter readers to visit their homes.
The smart metering system applies digital wireless communication technology to water meters to automatically measure water usage and transmit the data in real time.
This not only makes water billing more accurate and transparent but also allows daily or hourly usage analysis, helping to reduce water waste and enabling quick responses to leaks or accidents.
Hanam City started this project in 2023 and has so far applied the remote reading system to 12,500 water meters. This year, it plans to prioritize installing 1,000 remote reading terminals mainly in remote and old downtown areas, and will continue to invest annually to complete the installation by 2028.
A Hanam City official emphasized, "With the transition from the traditional visit-based reading method to a remote reading system, we expect a significant improvement in the efficiency of water administration," adding, "We will continue to strive to provide citizens with more convenient and accurate water services through leak monitoring and real-time data utilization."
Meanwhile, to provide advanced water administration services, Hanam City plans to implement a 'Water and Sewage Fee SMS Notification Service' starting this year, allowing citizens to receive their water bills via text message.
