Organized by the Guri City Branch of the Gyeonggi-do Women's Organizations Council (President Hong Yeon-hee), the campaign was further enriched by the joint participation of the Family Division of the Guri City Community Security Council (Chair Lee Young-haeng) and the NH Nonghyup Bank Guri Branch (Branch Manager Park Hyun-sook).
International Women's Day was designated to commemorate the day on March 8, 1908, when American female workers, suffering from low wages while working in poor conditions, tragically died in a fire. It honors their demand for basic survival rights and political rights with the slogan "Give us bread and roses."
The International Women's Day campaign, themed around spreading a culture of gender equality that begins with respect and understanding to prevent discrimination and violence and build an equal society, involved sharing "roses," symbolizing suffrage for expanded social participation, with citizens to reflect on the meaning of gender equality.
Additionally, as part of a rice consumption promotion campaign led by Nonghyup, rice cakes were distributed alongside a campaign encouraging breakfast consumption, widely promoting healthy eating habits.
The city is making various efforts to widely spread a culture of gender equality in the community by establishing related foundations for promoting gender equality policies, creating environments to prevent crimes against women, providing education to prevent violence such as sexual violence, sexual harassment, domestic violence, and prostitution, offering counseling and legal support for female victims of violence, and supporting programs to empower women.
Hong Yeon-hee, President of the Guri City Branch of the Gyeonggi-do Women's Organizations Council, said, "I hope the International Women's Day campaign serves as an opportunity to move beyond gender distinctions and stereotypes and to strive for greater mutual understanding."
Mayor Baek Kyung-hyun of Guri City stated, "Through the International Women's Day campaign, we were able to share the meaning of gender equality with citizens," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that a culture of gender equality is reflected and spread throughout the local community."
