A stage where you can hear the aria "Lascia ch'io pianga," famous as the aria sung by the protagonist in the movie 'Farinelli,' will be prepared.
The Seoul Arts Center will present a special concert titled "Ren? Jacobs and B'Rock Orchestra," performing Handel's first oratorio "Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" at the Concert Hall on March 29.
"Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" is Handel's first oratorio, composed in the spring of 1707 when he was young. The aria "Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa," featured in this oratorio, is especially famous. Handel also used the melody of this aria in the aria "Lascia ch'io pianga" from the opera "Rinaldo," which premiered in 1711. Handel used this melody in several works, with the earliest known usage in the opera "Almira," premiered in 1705.
Handel's imaginative oratorio "Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" is a work containing philosophical discourse of the Baroque era exploring death, life, and the essence of humanity. It depicts the process of inner growth where "Bellezza" (Beauty) moves beyond "Piacere" (Pleasure) and is guided by "Tempo" (Time) and "Disinganno" (Disillusionment).
Handel realized the libretto by the renowned art patron Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili with exquisite music. Influenced by Italian opera, it features splendid arias and coloratura techniques, allowing enjoyment of Handel's unique style that enhances emotions and dramatic development beyond mere virtuosity.
World-renowned conductor Ren? Jacobs will lead the period-instrument specialist B'Rock Orchestra. Jacobs, a countertenor-turned-early music conductor, has established a unique position in opera, sacred music, and oratorio fields. He is well known for profound research and interpretation. The B'Rock Orchestra specializes in period instruments and has been collaborating with Jacobs since 2012 to recreate Baroque masterpieces.
The attractive vocal cast also draws attention. Soprano Im Sun-hye will passionately perform the role of "Bellezza," joined by soprano Katerina Kasper, countertenor Paul Figuier, and tenor Thomas Walker on stage.
Tickets can be reserved through the Seoul Arts Center website, call center, and Interpark.
