Gyeongbuk Office of Education to Introduce AI Digital Textbooks... Over 50% of Elementary, Middle, and High Schools Interested

Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced on the 10th that it will introduce AI digital textbooks for English, Mathematics, and Information subjects for 3rd and 4th grade elementary students, as well as 1st year middle and high school students, in line with the 2022 revised curriculum.

In a survey conducted during the winter vacation last January regarding the intention to adopt AI digital textbooks, one-third of schools in the Gyeongbuk region expressed their willingness to participate. After preparations for the new semester in February, more than 50% of schools indicated their desire to implement the system. The Gyeongbuk Office of Education plans to accept applications until April and begin full-scale operation.

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education is preparing various support measures to ensure that schools wishing to use AI digital textbooks can do so smoothly. In accordance with the Ministry of Education's schedule, the office is providing selection manuals and related materials, as well as conducting final infrastructure checks to ensure thorough preparation. Additionally, the office will directly sign contracts with publishing companies to reduce the administrative burden on schools and will fully subsidize subscription fees.

Along with the introduction of AI digital textbooks, a "Digital Competency Education Week" will be held at all schools in the province in March to help students use digital devices safely and responsibly. Customized training programs, such as hands-on lesson design workshops and on-site school consultations, will also be provided to help teachers effectively utilize AI digital textbooks. Through these efforts, the office aims to maximize the benefits of personalized lessons, drive educational innovation, and provide students with enjoyable and meaningful learning experiences.

AI digital textbooks will be used alongside traditional paper textbooks and are expected to serve as teaching assistants that support both teachers and students. In particular, they are projected to help create efficient learning environments in large or mixed-grade classes and to maximize individual student learning outcomes.

Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Office of Education, stated, "We will actively utilize AI digital textbooks to help students acquire the competencies needed for the future society," and added, "We will continue to expand the adoption of AI digital textbooks so that more schools and students can benefit. Furthermore, we will expand AI-based education and continuously promote various policies to strengthen digital literacy and competency."
