Operation of Seongdong Purumi Recycling Stations and expansion of food waste RFID meter distribution achieved a reduction of 2,760 tons of household waste last year

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it will implement a support project for the purchase of small-scale waste reducers to reduce food waste generated at each household.

Over the past three years, more than 65% of food waste has been generated from households, and the disposal costs have been continuously increasing.

Accordingly, the district will encourage residents' voluntary participation to reduce the generation of food waste and create a resource-recycling city by supporting the purchase cost when purchasing small-scale food waste reducers for home use. However, the product must have a function to reduce food waste by methods such as heat drying or fermentation and must be certified to be eligible for support.

This year, a subsidy of up to 280,000 KRW, which is 40% of the purchase cost of the reducer, will be provided to a total of 625 households. Applications can be made by visiting the local community service center of the resident’s district or through quick reservation on the Seongdong-gu Office website from March 10 to April 4. Priority will be given to households with four or more members, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The subsidy can be received if selected as a support recipient by submitting the food waste disposal records for two months before and after using the reducer. Detailed information regarding the application can be found on the announcement section of the Seongdong-gu Office website.

The district is promoting various projects to reduce household waste. Last year, projects such as the ‘300,000 Challenge to Reduce Waste in Apartment Complexes’ and the ‘Expansion of Food Waste RFID Meter Distribution’ were implemented, achieving a reduction of 2,760 tons of household waste.

This year, in addition to supporting the purchase of small-scale food waste reducers, the district plans to continue resident-led household waste reduction policies such as expanding the operation of Seongdong Purumi Recycling Stations and the separate collection of waste vinyl.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I hope that the support for purchasing ‘small-scale food waste reducers’ will serve as an opportunity for each household to actively participate in reducing food waste disposal.” He added, “We will continue to strive to create a more pleasant environment that improves residents’ quality of life and to promote resident-led carbon neutrality.”
