Abandoning Immediate Appeal by the Prosecution
"That Alone Is Grounds for Resignation"
Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 9th regarding the prosecution's order to release Yoon Seok-yeol following the court's decision to cancel his detention, "Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung must resign immediately, and if he refuses, all measures including impeachment should be taken."
After an emergency party meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day, Park said at a rally condemning the prosecution, "The greatest responsibility for this incident lies with Prosecutor General Shim." He continued, "Shim gave up the opportunity to file an immediate appeal against the first trial court's incomprehensible judgment and to have a higher court review it, thereby releasing Yoon Seok-yeol, the ringleader of the rebellion," criticizing, "There is no need for further discussion; this alone is a matter that requires him to step down."
Park raised his voice again, saying, "The responsibility for wasting time by not indicting immediately and holding a meeting of prosecutors general lies with Shim Woo-jung. Without any other discussion, Shim Woo-jung must resign for that reason alone." Regarding measures other than impeachment of Shim, he emphasized, "It is the duty of the National Assembly to protect the constitutional order and democracy. The Democratic Party will do everything possible to protect the people and the country in accordance with that duty."
Addressing the Constitutional Court, he stressed, "Yoon Seok-yeol is the ringleader of the rebellion," and also urged, "Since the issues and evidence are clear, we request the Constitutional Court to deliver a swift verdict."
After the rally, when reporters asked if there was a deadline for Prosecutor General Shim's resignation, Kang Yoo-jung, the Democratic Party floor spokesperson, referred to the prosecution's failure to file an immediate appeal against the court's decision to cancel President Yoon's detention and said, "Then Prosecutor General Shim must take responsibility as the head of the prosecution. He should have resigned immediately, and in fact, it is already late," emphasizing, "Therefore, it is not a matter of setting a deadline, but that we will take follow-up measures."
When asked whether a vote on the impeachment motion against Prosecutor General Shim could be attempted at the plenary session scheduled for the 13th, Kang replied, "We are demanding immediate resignation, and if he does not resign, we intend to prepare various measures including impeachment afterward," indicating that the timing has not been set. However, regarding the timing of the accusation, she said, "I understand it will happen soon."
