Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Confirmed at Cheonan Laying Hen Farm... Quarantine Measures Strengthened

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) has been confirmed in Cheonan, Chungnam, leading to strengthened quarantine measures.

According to Cheonan City on the 9th, the H5 type AI antigen was detected at a layer chicken farm in Pungse-myeon, Dongnam-gu, through a nationwide poultry farm inspection conducted on the 8th. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency's detailed examination confirmed it as highly pathogenic (H5N1 type).

This is the first case in Cheonan for the 2024-2025 winter season and the 37th case nationwide at poultry farms.

The city deployed an initial quarantine team to enforce access control and disinfection measures, culled approximately 110,000 chickens at the farm, and disposed of contaminated items such as eggs and feed.

There are no poultry farms within a 500-meter radius, which is the range designated for preventive culling according to emergency action guidelines, so no additional culling will be conducted.

Quarantine authorities are conducting emergency quarantine measures around the affected farm and have issued movement restrictions on 2,045,000 poultry, including chickens, ducks, and quails, within a 10km surveillance zone, along with detailed inspections.

To prevent further spread, the city has installed two additional control posts near the affected farm and deployed nine quarantine vehicles to intensively disinfect wild bird habitats, farm access roads, and nearby streams.

Additionally, permanent disinfection facilities are being operated to ensure livestock vehicles are disinfected before visiting farms or livestock facilities. The city is also restricting vehicle entry into poultry farms and prohibiting livestock vehicles and related personnel from entering migratory bird habitats.

A city official stated, "We will make every effort to prevent further outbreaks and the spread of avian influenza (AI)."
