A Two-Way Race Expected with Rebuilding Korea Party Candidate Jeong Chulwon
Lee Jaejong (49, former Blue House administrator) has been officially confirmed as the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for the by-election for Damyang County Governor in Jeonnam.
On the afternoon of the 8th, the Democratic Party of Korea announced that Lee Jaejong was elected as the top candidate in the final vote for the Damyang County Governor by-election, confirming him as the official candidate.
Lee Jaejong secured the nomination after a fierce race that went to a runoff against Choi Hwasam. The Democratic Party conducted the runoff over two days, on the 7th and 8th, using a public participation method that reflected 50% of the votes from party members and 50% from the general public.
Immediately after the announcement of the runoff results, Lee Jaejong released a press statement saying, "As the people of Damyang and the Democratic Party members have chosen me for a new change in Damyang, I will do my utmost with greater humility and a strong sense of responsibility."
He expressed his gratitude to the other candidates who competed in the primary, saying, "I deeply thank Kim Yongju, Kim Jeongo, Kim Jongjin, and former lawmaker Yoon Youngdeok for considering Damyang's future and presenting their visions," and added, "I especially respect Choi Hwasam's experience and sincere dedication to Damyang, shown through a beautiful competition in the runoff, and I will move forward together for the development of Damyang."
He continued, "The support from the residents is not just for me as a candidate, but reflects their desire for a better Damyang," and pledged, "I will do my best to ensure that politics protects livelihoods and becomes a force to change the lives of the people."
Lee Jaejong also emphasized, "This election is not about promoting Lee Jaejong," adding, "It should be an election that promotes the value of Damyang and enhances the pride of its people."
He added, "I thank everyone who supported me, and I will listen more closely to those who did not," pledging, "I will open a path beyond differences for communication and beyond conflict for harmony."
Lee Jaejong plans to strengthen his policy activities and communicate even more closely with the residents ahead of the main election.
With the slogan "Strength Makes the Difference," Lee Jaejong has pledged the following: ▲A prosperous and wealthy rural area (innovation in agricultural and livestock product distribution), ▲Adding AI smart technology to rural welfare, ▲Creating a national rest area, ▲A place where people stay in Damyang, ▲Cultural Damyang, ▲Warm-hearted Damyang, ▲Competent Damyang, a special district for education, ▲Economically self-reliant Damyang.
Specific projects to support these pledges include attracting private investment for large-scale infrastructure comparable to Everland, establishing the Damyang Arts Troupe, creating a sports park, and developing the Changpyeong Food Specialization Complex and Bongsan General Industrial Complex.
The Rebuilding Korea Party also confirmed Jeong Chulwon (62), chairman of the Damyang County Council, as its candidate for the Damyang County Governor by-election and presented him with the nomination certificate. As a result, the by-election is expected to be a two-way race between the Democratic Party and the Rebuilding Korea Party candidates.
Meanwhile, if the Constitutional Court announces its ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Sukyeol by the 12th, the Damyang County Governor by-election will be held together with the presidential election in May. If the ruling is announced after the 12th, candidate registration will take place on the 13th and 14th, early voting on the 28th and 29th, and the main vote on April 2.
