Praises Court for "Conscience and Conviction"
Pressures Prosecution Over Continued Detention of Yoon
On the 8th, the People Power Party pressured the prosecution to enforce the court's decision to cancel the detention of President Yoon Seok-yeol, welcoming his release. They also criticized the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the Democratic Party of Korea, who investigated and arrested President Yoon, calling them "the starting point of all confusion" and "the Democratic Party lurking behind all the chaos and contamination," respectively.
Park Soo-min, the floor spokesperson for the People Power Party, held a briefing at the National Assembly that morning and said, "Throughout the impeachment motion and trial of President Yoon, as well as the CIO's investigation and arrest, there were serious constitutional procedural flaws and contamination. As of today (the 7th), all these contaminations and flaws are being healed."
Earlier, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 25 (Chief Judge Ji Gui-yeon) decided the day before to cancel the detention of President Yoon, who was indicted on charges of leading a rebellion. The court accepted the defense's claim that the prosecution indicted him after the detention period had expired. The court also pointed out that doubts about the legality of the investigation process, including whether the CIO had the authority to investigate the rebellion, needed to be resolved.
Spokesperson Park said, "We must no longer proceed with the confusion of fabricating rebellion charges, accusing him of rebellion, and adding and removing rebellion as grounds for impeachment," and welcomed the decision, saying, "Today, the judiciary of the Republic of Korea has clearly shown constitutional conscience and conviction."
Regarding the prosecution's failure to file an immediate appeal against the court's acceptance of the cancellation of President Yoon's detention, Park said, "Since the court decided all the circumstances during the suspension of execution, there is already an unconstitutional ruling," and urged the release, saying, "The cancellation of detention corrects a reason that is one step higher than the suspension of detention execution."
When asked by a reporter whether President Yoon would be released early this morning, Park said, "We expect that (President Yoon will be released early in the morning)," and emphasized, "Since numerous constitutional procedures have not been observed and national division is severe, the only way to recover is to return to the constitution."
When a reporter asked about the future schedule of the party leadership, Park said, "The cancellation of the president's detention was also decided suddenly," and predicted, "We will quickly consult with the president's side and arrange a meeting time." Regarding the ruling party lawmakers' visit to the Seoul Detention Center, he said, "I understand that the lawmakers visited individually," and added, "I heard the list includes about five members."
