Court's Decision to Revoke Arrest Faces Backlash
Calls for Constitutional Court to Make Swift Impeachment Ruling
On the 7th, Kang Gijung, Mayor of Gwangju, strongly protested the court's decision to revoke the arrest of President Yoon Sukyeol, urging the prosecution to immediately appeal and the Constitutional Court to swiftly decide on his impeachment.
Through his Facebook page, Mayor Kang stated, "There is more than enough reason to detain President Yoon," adding, "The prosecution should file an immediate appeal, and the Constitutional Court should quickly decide on impeachment and reapply for an arrest warrant."
Earlier that afternoon, the court accepted President Yoon's request for arrest revocation, which had been submitted a month prior. As a result, President Yoon is expected to be released from Seoul Detention Center after completing the necessary procedures. This comes 51 days after his arrest and 40 days since his indictment and detention.
Meanwhile, since the prosecution still has the option to file an immediate appeal under Article 97, Paragraph 4 of the Criminal Procedure Act, it is expected that it will take more time before a final decision is reached.
