Personal Information Protection Commission Holds AI and Data Industry Meeting: "We Will Support Innovation"

The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the afternoon of the 6th that it held an 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Industry Roundtable' at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul.


Attendees at the roundtable included representatives from platform companies such as Naver, Kakao, Google, and Meta; telecommunications companies such as SKT and KT; shopping mall companies such as Coupang and SSG; and new industry companies such as Entrap, Privenotics, and Stra. Hong Kwan-hee, Executive Director of LG Uplus and Senior Vice Chairman of the Korea Personal Information Protection Officers Council (the Council), along with representatives from LG Uplus, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, and others affiliated with the Council, also participated.

The Personal Information Protection Commission explained that this roundtable was organized to discuss ways to secure competitiveness in the domestic AI and data industries together with the industry.


On this day, the Commission shared key personal information policies to support the industry, while communicating its intention to concretize and supplement a principle-based personal information regulatory system. The Commission is promoting the establishment of special AI provisions under the Personal Information Protection Act.


The companies attending the roundtable stated, "The AI training data processing guidelines presented by the Commission last year have been very helpful in resolving legal uncertainties in the field," and requested, "Please continue to prepare various policies to support proactive and progressive activities by companies."


They also added, "There is a need to strengthen customized support so that small and startup companies can safely process personal information in accordance with personal information protection laws and guidelines."


Ko Hak-soo, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, said, "I believe that the challenge and innovation of companies are most important for the development of the AI and data ecosystem," and added, "We will actively support the creation of a personal information regulatory system in the AI era that the public can trust, so that continuous creative innovation based on data can take place in the private sector."
