Mokpo City Accelerates Mokpo Bridge Landscape Lighting Specialization Project
Aiming to Create a New Nighttime Tourism Landmark with Modernized Lighting
Secured 100 Billion Won in Funding as a Tourism Hub City
Focus on Safety and Administrative Transparency in Project Implementation
Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do (Mayor Park Hongryul) announced on the 6th that it is actively promoting the "Mokpo Bridge Landscape Lighting Specialization Project," which aims to modernize the outdated landscape lighting facilities on Mokpo Bridge as part of its tourism hub city development initiative.
Since its opening in 2012, Mokpo Bridge has become a representative nighttime landmark of Mokpo, harmonizing with nearby tourist attractions such as the Mokpo Marine Cable Car, Goha-do Marine Deck, and Daebandong Beach.
However, due to frequent malfunctions caused by aging facilities and monotonous lighting effects, the need for a new lighting system has been continuously raised.
In response, the city has been persistently requesting the Iksan Regional Land Management Office, which manages Mokpo Bridge, to secure its own budget and replace the old landscape lighting since 2018, but no notable results were achieved.
However, in 2020, when the city was selected as one of the four major tourism hub cities by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, a total budget of 100 billion won, including city funds, was secured, laying the groundwork for the Mokpo Bridge landscape lighting remodeling project.
Subsequently, the city proposed the lighting specialization project to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aiming to create a new nighttime tourism landmark through media productions such as media facade utilizing the exterior of Mokpo Bridge.
As a result, in January last year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism approved an amendment to the basic plan for the tourism hub city project, reflecting 9.6 billion won for the Mokpo Bridge Landscape Lighting Specialization Project, and the project also passed the Jeollanam-do local finance investment review.
Additionally, in April of the same year, the city visited the Iksan Regional Land Management Office (Marine Bridge Safety Division) to confirm the project implementation and discuss future plans, and received feedback that improvement of the landscape lighting was necessary, provided that facility safety is ensured.
Accordingly, the city has allocated 7.5 billion won of the project budget and received approval from the city council as a continuing project, and is currently carrying out the basic plan service for the Mokpo Bridge Landscape Lighting Specialization Project.
The city plans to establish a solid basic plan through continuous consultation with related agencies and strengthen communication with the city council to ensure administrative transparency. In addition, structural safety reviews and wind tunnel tests will be conducted along with the detailed design service to ensure bridge safety, in consultation with the Iksan office.
A city official stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the Mokpo Bridge Landscape Lighting Specialization Project, which will become a landmark in the tourism sector?one of Mokpo's three major growth axes?proceeds without any setbacks."
