Proactive Inspection for Ground Weakening During Thawing Season,
Swift Repairs and Control of Hazardous Areas
Resident Inspection Requests Accepted via Safety Report App...
Eliminating Blind Spots in Safety Inspections
Pohang City has designated March as the thawing season safety inspection period and has begun a large-scale inspection of 176 accident-prone locations.
The thawing season is a period when the frozen ground surface melts, weakening the ground and causing frequent casualties due to facility collapse, overturning, falling rocks, and other hazards.
This inspection is being promoted to proactively prevent various safety accidents caused by ground deformation and cracks during the thawing season and to preemptively block risk factors at sites threatening citizens.
For the safety of citizens, the city has designated 142 steep slope sites, 32 landslide-prone areas, and 2 solar power generation facilities as risk areas, and has fully activated an inspection team involving related departments, affiliated organizations, and the Pohang City Safety Management Advisory Group for thorough on-site inspections.
The public-private joint inspection team, including experts, analyzed recent cases of casualties nationwide and has begun detailed inspections of hazardous facilities and sites.
To prevent citizen damage in advance, the team focuses on inspecting neglected dead trees, removing foreign substances from drainage channels, installing rockfall prevention measures, checking for uneven settlement of buildings, and cracks in major structural parts (columns, beams, slabs, etc.).
Minor issues found during inspections will be corrected on-site, and facilities requiring repairs, reinforcement, or detailed safety diagnoses will have usage restrictions and control lines installed to ensure citizen safety, followed by prompt construction work for safety.
In addition, the city operates a ‘Resident Inspection Application System’ that allows citizens to request safety inspections of nearby hazardous facilities via the Safety Report app or the website to eliminate blind spots in inspections.
For the received facilities, experts will quickly conduct safety inspections to assess the situation and share the measures taken with citizens.
Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil stated, “During the thawing season, there are many unpredictable and invisible risk factors, so thorough pre-inspections are necessary. We will do our best to create an environment where citizens can use facilities with peace of mind through proactive repairs and improvements of vulnerable facilities and hazardous locations.”
