14,007 Family Relationship Registrations Processed in Songpa-gu in 2024: Ranked First in Seoul and Second Nationwide
Family Relationship Registration Team Enhances Expertise for Prompt and Accurate Service
# In January this year, Mr. B, a Chinese national living in a small city in Gyeonggi-do, had to visit Songpa-gu to register the birth of his child. He wanted to use his surname in Korean pronunciation rather than the Chinese pronunciation for his child's name, but after inquiring at several places, he received inconsistent answers regarding the possibility. When Mr. B visited Songpa-gu, which handles various related cases, he was able to complete the birth registration quickly.
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 6th that it recorded 14,007 family relationship registration reports last year, ranking first among Seoul’s autonomous districts and second nationwide.
Family relationship registration tasks officially record and certify individual citizens’ family events and changes such as birth, adoption, marriage, and death. These national duties, overseen by the Supreme Court, are delegated to the heads of cities (districts), towns, and townships for processing. Except for some tasks, processing can be done regardless of the applicant’s place of residence.
According to related statistical systems, the total number of family relationship registration reports processed by the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul in 2024 was 234,852. Among them, Songpa-gu handled 14,007 reports, the highest number received and processed. This was also the second highest nationwide, following Seo-gu Office in Incheon City, which ranked first.
The district attributed this achievement to systematic task allocation and strengthening employee expertise.
In particular, family relationship registration work requires high staff competence because related laws, regulations, and precedents are revised relatively frequently.
The district assigned a total of 10 team members to the family relationship registration team, centered around a team leader with over five years of experience. They meticulously divided related tasks such as reception, recording, verification, and registry management to enhance work speed and simultaneously help each employee develop their expertise.
This approach has greatly helped in smoothly handling somewhat complicated reports such as declarations of existence or non-existence of biological parents and corrections of dual family registers.
In fact, many applicants revisit the district office to express their gratitude for the staff’s proactive and accurate work.
Additionally, the district provides various administrative services related to family relationships to enhance resident convenience. These include ▲immediate processing of name change reports ▲providing guidebooks for follow-up procedures after birth, marriage, and death reports ▲operating a photo zone commemorating marriage registration ▲offering congratulatory cards and Taegeukgi flags for marriage registration ▲sending mobile congratulatory cards for birth registration.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “Family relationship registration is an important task that officially records an individual’s life, so we focus on staff expertise and prompt, accurate processing. Going forward, Songpa-gu officials will continue to uphold creativity, innovation, and fairness as core values and provide ‘serving administration’ from the residents’ perspective that meets their needs.”
