40 Medical School Deans Agree on Restoring Medical School Quota to 3,058 Next Year

Presidents of 40 universities nationwide that have medical schools have reportedly reached a consensus on restoring the medical school admission quota for the 2026 academic year to 3,058, the number before the increase. This is interpreted as the university presidents joining the medical school deans who recently proposed to the government the restoration of the medical school quota.


According to the education sector on the 5th, the 'Council of University Presidents for the Advancement of Medical Schools (UCPAMS),' a gathering of presidents from 40 universities with medical schools nationwide, held an online meeting that day and mostly agreed on a plan to reduce next year's medical school quota by 2,000 from the increased quota (5,058) back to 3,058.

However, it is known that a precondition was set that the full return of students on leave and the medical community's agreement that the 2027 medical school quota will be determined according to the decision of the Medical Workforce Supply and Demand Estimation Committee.


The Ministry of Education also attended the meeting but did not issue an official stance regarding the medical school quota. In a notice sent to the press corps, the Ministry explained, "A Ministry of Education official observed the UCPAMS online meeting held today," but "did not submit any opinions during the decision-making process." They added, "There is no separate position from the Ministry of Education regarding the UCPAMS meeting."
