Recently, there have been concerns that the rapid increase in the number of light-emitting diode (LED) electronic display boards in subway stations is causing inconvenience to citizens.
According to the 'Advertisement Bidding Business Proposal Guide' and 'Advertisement Facility Categories and Specifications' by Seoul Metro on the 6th, LED electronic display boards in stations are installed based on criteria such as "installation of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels or LED panels" and "installation with specifications equal to or higher than existing advertisements."
In this regard, industry insiders point out that the quantity and spacing of LED installations are not clearly defined, leading to excessive installation of LEDs. This has resulted in issues such as light pollution within stations, increased indoor temperatures, power consumption, and reduced available space.
An industry official stated, "In the case of Gangnam Station in Seoul, pillar advertisements that were operated with large lighting advertisements and LCD panel advertisements have mostly been replaced with LED electronic display boards," adding, "A systematic solution is needed."
