Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, met with Cho Kyuhong, Minister of Health and Welfare, at the Seoul Government Complex on the 5th, requesting that the "allocation of seats for the new national medical school at the integrated university in Jeollanam-do" be given top priority, separate from the general increase in medical school admissions.
During the meeting, Governor Kim stated, "Jeollanam-do has achieved the integration of two national universities, Mokpo National University and Suncheon National University, in line with the government's policy of one national university per province. This is the result of the earnest wishes and determination of Jeollanam-do residents who desperately want the establishment of a medical school. Therefore, a national medical school must be established in Jeollanam-do."
He continued, "While the government and the medical community resolve medical issues through a grand compromise, I urge the government to prioritize the 'establishment of a national medical school and allocation of seats in Jeollanam-do,' which was promised to the public in a joint government statement, separately from the general increase in medical school admissions."
Minister Cho responded, "The integration of Mokpo National University and Suncheon National University must be achieved, and the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do should also proceed. When the government discusses the allocation of medical school seats, we plan to include Jeollanam-do's position in the discussions."
Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do plans to actively communicate with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, the National Assembly, and continue persuading the medical community, making all-out efforts to establish a national medical school.
