Lack of Fairness in the Selection Process
Evaluation Favored Certain Regions
On the 5th, Daegu City announced that Gunwi was selected as the final relocation site for the integrated relocation of the Daegu military units, based on the evaluation results conducted by the Evaluation Committee at the Daegu Policy Research Institute.
Since the Ministry of National Defense announced Yeongcheon City, Sangju City, and Gunwi County as preliminary candidate sites on January 21, Daegu City entrusted a professional institution (Daegu Policy Research Institute) to conduct the evaluation, and the decision was made about 40 days later.
On the 5th, Park Bong-gyu, the chairman of the promotion committee, stated that there are considerable issues with the final selection of the military base relocation site in Daegu and that necessary countermeasures are being reviewed.
Immediately after the announcement of the final relocation site for the Daegu military units integration project, the Yeongcheon City Daegu Military Unit Attraction Promotion Committee raised concerns about the fairness of the evaluation results, issued a statement urging a re-evaluation, and is also considering legal responses such as information disclosure requests and audit petitions.
The statement claims that transparency and fairness were significantly lacking during the selection process, particularly criticizing the ambiguity of the evaluation criteria and the arbitrary application of identical scores across some evaluation items without conducting proper assessments, which favored certain regions. They are demanding that the Ministry of National Defense conduct a direct re-evaluation to ensure fairness.
Park Bong-gyu, Chairman of the Yeongcheon Daegu Military Unit Attraction Promotion Committee, said, “We deeply regret the results of the final relocation site selection,” and added, “We will thoroughly review the various issues raised during the selection process and take all necessary measures.”
