Mokpo Coast Guard Recruiting 10 'Coastal Safety Keepers'

Patrol Activities in Vulnerable Areas
Local Residents to Be Assigned Until the 1st of Next Month

Mokpo Coast Guard (Chief Kwon Oseong) announced on the 5th that it will recruit 10 'Coastal Safety Guardians' composed of local residents from the 26th of this month to the 1st of next month, in order to prevent maritime accidents and establish an efficient coastal safety management system.

Coastal Safety Guardians are appointed under the 'Act on the Prevention of Coastal Accidents' and are local residents who are well-acquainted with the characteristics of the coastal area. They are assigned to vulnerable regions to carry out accident prevention publicity and guidance activities through safety patrols, as well as inspections of surrounding safety facilities.

Last year, 10 people were active at five locations, including Bukhang Pier, and the operational results showed a significant decrease in coastal accidents within the patrol areas during the activity hours of the Coastal Safety Guardians compared to the average for the same period over the past three years (from 8 to 4 cases).

Applicants must be local residents who are well-acquainted with the characteristics of the coast, in good health, and have experience or enthusiasm for coastal accident prevention activities. Anyone aged 19 or older may apply.

The selection process consists of document screening, a physical fitness test, and an interview evaluation. Those finally selected will receive job and general education, including relevant laws and accident response procedures, and will be active for about six months from May to October.

During the activity period, Coastal Safety Guardians will be assigned in pairs to five coastal danger zones in the Mokpo area (Bukhang Pier, Bukhang Pier Small Dock, Yudal Amusement Park, Dongmyeong Port, Pyeonghwa Square). They will work 17 days a month (13 weekdays, 4 weekends) for three hours each day during peak safety management hours, conducting foot patrols.

To apply, visit the Maritime Safety Division of Mokpo Coast Guard or a nearby Coast Guard substation to fill out and submit an application form.

A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, "We expect the operation of the Coastal Safety Guardians to greatly contribute to the prevention of coastal accidents in the area," and added, "We hope many local residents with experience or enthusiasm for coastal accident prevention activities will participate."
