Generation Z Shows the Lowest Trust in SNS for Social Issue Information
Millennials and Older Generations Also Distrust Online Video Platforms
A survey found that among adults in South Korea, Generation Z is the least trusting of information related to social issues on social networking services (SNS).
The results of the "Asking Generations About Generations" survey released on the 4th by the Korea Press Foundation contained this finding. According to the results, when asked about the least trusted sources of information during social issues, Generation Z showed the highest distrust of SNS, with a rate of 33.2%.
Generation Z also distrusted online video platforms (15.1%) and blogs, online cafes, and community bulletin boards (11.1%) in that order. The Millennial generation also answered that they trusted SNS the least (27.0%), but the rate was lower than that of Generation Z. Online video platforms (18.4%) and blogs, online cafes, and community bulletin boards (10.6%) were also cited as difficult sources to trust.
The foundation conducted an online survey from the 14th to the 17th of last month targeting 1,000 adults aged 18 and over nationwide. In this survey, birth years were classified as follows: before 1954 as the Liberation and Korean War generation, 1955?1964 as the Baby Boom generation, 1965?1979 as Generation X, 1980?1994 as Millennials, 1995?2009 as Generation Z, and after 2010 as Generation Alpha.
Unlike the MZ generation, respondents from Generation X (born 1965?1979) and older chose online video platforms as the least trusted media. Distrust of online video platforms was highest among the Liberation~Korean War generation (born before 1954) at 31.8%.
Responses also varied by generation to the question about whether they perceived their generation as leading significant social changes. 91.1% of the Baby Boom generation answered "yes," followed by 81.8% of the Liberation and Korean War generation. Millennials and Generation Z scored lower at 55.7% and 58.3%, respectively.
Additionally, 82.8% of the Baby Boom generation responded that there are clear differences between their generation and others. Only 52.1% of Millennials agreed with the same question, marking the lowest rate among all generations.
Among the survey respondents, 82.3% recognized generational conflicts in society as a serious issue. Millennials (86.2%) were the most empathetic to this problem, while the Liberation~Korean War generation (77.3%) showed the least concern.
The Media Research Center of the Korea Press Foundation explained, "Online video platforms are the most actively used media across all generations but are noted as the least trusted sources of information, which is noteworthy," adding, "The M generation and Generation Z responded that they trust SNS even less, showing a difference from other generations."
This survey was conducted by sending emails through the professional polling company Macromill Embrain on behalf of the Korea Press Foundation, allowing respondents to access the survey page. The sampling error is ±3.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
