China says it will "protect its rights" with countermeasures against Trump's '10+10% tariffs'

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce Announces Official Statement

China says it will "protect its rights" with countermeasures against Trump's '10+10% tariffs'

The Donald Trump administration in the United States announced on the 4th (local time) that it will impose an additional '10+10% tariff' on all Chinese imports, while the Chinese government stated that it will take 'countermeasures' targeting the U.S.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on the morning of the same day, "The United States has once again imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese exports to the U.S. starting from the 4th, citing issues such as fentanyl," and added, "China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this and will take countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests."

The spokesperson stated, "China is one of the countries with the strictest drug prohibition policies and the most thorough enforcement in the world. China and the U.S. have carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation on drug prohibition, achieving significant results," but "the U.S. has shifted responsibility and repeated the same mistakes by raising tariffs citing the fentanyl issue."

He emphasized, "This action by the U.S. ignores facts, international trade rules, and the voices of various countries, representing typical unilateralism and bullying behavior."

The spokesperson urged, "China calls on the U.S. to respect the rights and interests of other countries and immediately withdraw the unilateral tariff measures that are baseless and beneficial neither to others nor itself," adding, "We hope the U.S. will handle the issue objectively and rationally and promptly return to the right track of resolving differences through equal dialogue."

President Trump reiterated on the 3rd that the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect from the 4th. He also signed an executive order imposing an additional 10% tariff on China. For China, in addition to the 10% additional tariff implemented since February 4th, another 10% tariff has been added, resulting in a total of 20% additional tariffs compared to before.
