With the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol awaiting only the Constitutional Court's verdict, Kim Tae-heum, the Governor of South Chungcheong Province, is drawing attention as the "Jungwon card" representing the Chungcheong region in the event of an early presidential election.
As interest grows over whether Governor Kim will run for president, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo expressed his support for Kim in an interview with a local daily newspaper last month, stating, "A candidate from the Chungcheong region is absolutely necessary."
In political circles, there is speculation that if a Chungcheong region candidate capable of appealing to both conservatives and moderates emerges in this presidential election, it could disrupt the traditional Seoul metropolitan area-centered power structure.
The ongoing push for administrative integration between South Chungcheong and Daejeon is also aligned with this trend.
As the 8th popularly elected governor of South Chungcheong, Kim has recorded high approval ratings among metropolitan government heads and has established recognition and influence that surpass party support rates.
Within the People Power Party, expectations for Kim are rising as the possibility of an early presidential election gains traction.
Notably, in his recent March 1st Independence Movement Day address, Kim argued, "We must abolish the imperial presidency and amend the power structure to a parliamentary cabinet system or a semi-presidential system."
He added, "With the determination to risk everything, I will devote myself to uniting Chungcheong," a statement widely interpreted as signaling his intention to run for president.
There is growing attention on the role of the Chungcheong region and the actions of Governor Kim Tae-heum in shaping the future political landscape amid the prospect of an early presidential election.
