Compensation of up to 10 million KRW for Injury Death
and Expanded Resident Safety Insurance Coverage
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) announced on the 3rd that it has enrolled in a resident safety insurance that covers five items: injury death (excluding traffic injury death), injury disability (excluding traffic injury), public transportation injury treatment costs, burn surgery costs, and emergency room visit costs for dog bite accidents, to support its residents.
The resident safety insurance benefits Yongsan-gu residents anywhere nationwide in South Korea. Since Yongsan-gu directly contracts with the insurance company and bears the insurance premiums, residents can receive benefits without any separate enrollment procedures or cost burdens.
The insurance period lasts until February 22 of next year, and all residents registered in Yongsan-gu, including registered foreigners, are automatically enrolled. Residents who register their move-in to Yongsan-gu during the insurance period are automatically enrolled, and the insurance is automatically terminated upon moving out.
Last year, Yongsan-gu’s resident safety insurance paid out a total of 17 claims amounting to 34.7 million KRW. Major cases included 3 injury deaths, 4 injury disabilities, 5 public transportation injury treatment claims, 3 burn surgery claims, and 2 emergency room visit claims for dog bites.
This year, Yongsan-gu has maintained the existing coverage items while adding “Compensation for Injury Diagnosis from Social Disasters (excluding infectious diseases).” The coverage is structured to avoid overlap with the citizen safety insurance operated by Seoul City, allowing residents to receive the maximum possible benefits.
Surgical costs for treating second-degree or higher burns caused by injury are paid at 200,000 KRW per occurrence. In cases of medical treatment due to bites from stray dogs, abandoned dogs, or pet dogs, 100,000 KRW is also covered.
If death caused by injury is recognized, compensation of 10 million KRW is provided, and in the event of disability, compensation is paid up to 2 million KRW based on item-specific criteria. However, according to commercial law, those under 15 years old are not eligible for compensation for injury death. For injuries sustained in traffic accidents while using public transportation, treatment costs are supported up to 1 million KRW according to injury grades from 1 to 13.
This insurance can be overlapped regardless of whether the resident has citizen safety insurance or personal insurance. Residents who wish to claim compensation must apply within three years from the date of the accident. Before applying, they should contact the Yongsan-gu Resident Safety Insurance Consultation Center to check the required documents and then submit them to the insurance company. For more details, contact the Yongsan-gu Safety and Disaster Division.
District Mayor Park Hee-young said, “We will actively promote this so that no resident misses out on insurance benefits after an accident.”
Meanwhile, Seoul City also operates citizen safety insurance, covering seven items including social disasters, natural disasters, and traffic injuries in school zones (Silver Zones). Those who suffer damages covered by this insurance can receive compensation up to 20 million KRW.
